The fauna of Bibione

To enter the pinewood of Bibione means to start a journey full of emotions trying to spot animals: it could happen to meet some specimen of the Herman’s’ tortoise, fallow deer, cormorants and many other animals, which chose/elected Bibione to their natural habitat..
The waters near the river mouth are often chosen by many water birds to make a stop during their migration journeys: in spring and autumn the black headed gull and the yellow legged gull together with the common tern dive into the river searching for food, while the kingfisher prefers to stay near the river banks where the water is not too deep. If you take a look towards the piles along the channel of the river’s mouth you could spot a cormorant in the act of displaying its wings to dry its feathers.

Among the marshes and the cane thicket some species developed a close and established relation with the habitat of the marsh vegetation: the coot, the pond turtle, the marsh harrier and the water vole cohabit in this environment in perfect harmony.

From the salty ponds of the lagoon by Ravelino the black winged stilt with its long beck, the little egrets and couples of mallards, purple and grey herons and of great white egrets fly up.

In the fields around the river mouth you fine a unique fish species, the mosquito fish and many amphibians, among them the pool frog and the green toad.

Other bird species spend their winter in the pinewood while other chose this environment to nest: the blackcap, the nightingale, the blackbird, the great tit, the great spotted woodpecker, the goldfinch, the robin, the wren, the sparrow hawk, the woodcock, the warbler and the hoopoe are only some of the bird species you could encounter there.

In the green dry and sun kissed fields of the under wood you find the green lizard and the wall lizard, while among the grass you could spot the tree frog. And, beside the hedgehog, small rodents and the beach martens, even some specimen of fallow deer were seen, while the presence of the polecat and the deer can not be excluded.
