Ancient, fascinating houses
The so called Casoni are the simple dwellings plunged in nature at the mouth of the Tagliamento river, not far away from the centre of Bibione.
Once they were the fishermen’s houses and today they are still used by their owners as seat of their holidays
Organised tours allow tourists to visit these huts offering them a day in full contact with nature in the atmosphere of the past.
The Casoni are an example of the so-called spontaneous architecture: built on ground elevations, they are easily recognisable for their rectangular shape and for the use of natural materials available in the lagoon, such as wood, used for the carrying structure, and reeds, used for the roofing.
The interior bears witness to the modest life of times gone. The entrance is a single opening and the fittings are simple but practical: a couch, a brick or stone fireplace in the centre of the room and finally a table with benches around it.
The Casoni are a proof of the close bond linking once man and nature, and are a trace of the ancient activities that were connected to the river, such as hunting and fishing.
